The Overbekeplein, together with the Grote Kring, forms a key link between the historic city centre and the commercial axis of Kortrijk. The redevelopment of the square was necessary to address structural issues with the underground car park and to restore access for emergency services, as well as to reverse a downward spiral of vacancy. The new design re-establishes the square as a central element of the urban fabric and strengthens its connections with the surrounding city. A carefully balanced mix of paved surfaces and green areas creates a legible and versatile public space. Play elements and places to stay encourage use by different age groups and contribute to a lively square where encounter, movement and urban vitality are central. Overbekeplein has thus become a recognisable and active component of Kortrijk’s urban regeneration.
